Khoobsurat
(2014)
Khoobsurat also known as Disney's Khoobsurat, is a 2014 Hindi romantic comedy film. The film is directed by Shashanka Ghosh and produced by Rhea Kapoor, Anil Kapoor and Siddharth Roy Kapur. The film is loosely based on the 1980 film of the same name.
Story: Mrinalini 'Milli' Chakravarty (Sonam Kapoor) is a physiotherapist who works for the IPL. Her mother Manju (Kirron Kher) hopes that she will find a man someday, stating that it will be even better if the bloke belongs to royalty. Milli recalls her previous breakups and having sworn off men, tells Manju to forget it. As fate would have it, her services are called for by a royal family whose Raja's legs are failing him. Dr. Milli travels to the palace and is dumbstruck by its magnificence. Her enthusiasm and clumsiness get the best of her when she almost knocks over a knight in front of the rigid Nirmala Devi Rathore (Ratna Pathak), the Rani. Milli finds that her casual way of living does not appeal to the royal family whose overly strict disciplinary rules demand otherwise. One night, she accidentally finds herself with Yuvraj Vikram Singh Rathore (Fawad Afzal Khan) in his bed. Being the son of the Raja and Rani, she discovers that his distant personality does not make him any different from his parents. Despite their awkward meeting, she does not mind admitting that he is a fine specimen of a man. Milli also discovers that Divya, the youngest child of the family, has an interest in acting and is planning to run away from home. Divya requests Milli to keep her showbiz dream a secret and that she has to do what her mother thinks is right for her; study in order to get admission in the Oxford University. While Milli discourages Divya from running away, she tells her that a seventeen year girl should be allowed to pursue her dreams. She becomes Divya's confidante and helps her with her studies.
The free-spirited doctor discovers that the Raja is stubborn as he does not wish to be cured. She tries to convince him but to no avail and turns to Vikram instead. Vikram, described as a 'business machine', tells her exactly what the Rani informed her when she made an attempt to appeal to her earlier; if she cannot handle the job, arrangements will be made for her departure to Delhi. Milli accuses the royal family of being self-absorbed and informs Vikram that she will leave only when she believes that the task is unmanageable for her. Vikram reconsiders and says that he will try, albeit making no promises. Unfortunately, the Raja is adamant. Milli makes up her mind not to force him and in return, he allows her access to his wine collection. After partying with the royal family's loyal butler Ram Sevak (Ashok Banthia) and his staff one night on a happy occasion, Milli learns the reason for the Raja's unwillingness to be cured. Ram Sevak reveals the death of Ambar, the family's eldest son, ten years ago in a car crash. The Raja had gifted a sports convertible to him and the two went for a ride in it. Ambar, having lost control of the car due to over-speeding, passes away. The Raja's legs are disabled due to the accident and he goes into a coma for six months. Devastated, Milli understands that the Raja is simply being consumed by guilt over his son's death. She changes her mind about returning to Delhi, shames the Raja into getting over his guilt and forces him to perform his exercises. When Vikram saves her from kidnappers, she kisses him in her drunken state and regrets it the next morning. Although the two deny any attraction between them, they start falling for each other. Milli's parents give her surprise visit and find her away on a business trip with Vikram during which she confesses her love for him. Vikram refuses to acknowledge it, saying that they come from two very different stocks. It is known that he is engaged to a lady of his status Kiara (Aditi Rao Hydari). Divya also runs away from home to try out for auditions in Jaipur. Milli informs the Rani about her awareness of Divya's plans and is ordered to leave. Divya returns and tells Nirmala the truth; she came back because of Milli. The Rani, broken over the way she treated Milli, is unable to find peace. Meanwhile, the Raja surprises her by tripping her with his legs and standing up. He also admits that he saw Divya run away from home. The Rani could not believe it and he tells her that this is what Milli has been trying to teach them; to love life as it is and not mope over an incident which should be forgotten at this point. On the other hand, Milli is heartbroken due to Vikram's refusal of her love for him.
Vikram himself drives to an unknown destination and it is revealed that he has broken off his engagement with his fiancee, Kiara. He confesses his love for Milli and the royal couple gives him their blessings, telling him to go find her in Delhi. He does so and discovers that Milli was quite disturbed after returning from Sambhalgarh and needed help, a therapy. After getting permission from Milli's father, Prateik, Vikram reaches the therapy place with Kabir(Milli's brother). He finds Milli and asks her, while she insists for the permission of Manju. Manju initially refuses as she finds Vikram always addressing himself as "Hum" which means "We". Vikram wins her approval by asking for her daughter's hand in marriage in Milli's style. Hence, as the wife of Vikram Singh Rathore, Milli is given the title of the royal misfit. The film ends with Milli and Vikram's marriage reception party, with everybody dancing.
